From its humble beginnings in a San Francisco garage, “seed to sale” cannabis company Cookies has become an industry leader in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Co-founder Jai, a Bay Area cultivator, first bred the iconic Girl Scout Cookies strain (now known as GSC) enjoyed by cannivores around the world. Fellow founder Berner, a chart-topping rapper who performs with the likes of Wiz Khalifa, created Cookies’ lifestyle brand, including everything from hoodies and chinos to stash bags and grinders.
Cookies already had plenty of character—not to mention the cultivation capacity (25,000 square feet), strains (over 50), and products (herb, edibles, vapes, and more)—to take their brand to the next level. What they needed was a website to match.
When Cookies approached us, they’d already established a clear aesthetic: edgy urban fashions, macro shots of cannabis with every trichome and pistil in relief, the branded “Cookies blue.” Their requests for their website included a full set of marketing tools and landing pages, a store locator, event listings, a press section, and social media sharing, for starters. Perhaps most importantly: an engaging showcase for their products. After hashing out the details, we kicked it into high gear.

Given the restrictions surrounding marijuana sales, an age gate for Cookies’ website was a must. To improve the user experience, we made the age gate time-based, with a Remember me option that extends the grace period before visitors need to verify their age again. Like all of the elements on Cookies’ site, the age gate is fully responsive, displaying flawlessly on devices ranging from the iPhone 5 up to the largest widescreen monitor.
Herb and edibles, vapes and concentrates—Cookies offers products aplenty. To advertise the goods, we devised a product display strategy that features all the benefits of an e-commerce experience but doesn’t offer the option for checkout… yet. Selecting from multiple categories, users can browse the products that whet their particular appetite. Learning more about any item—its phenotype, effects, aroma, taste—takes a single click.

For the time being, the only (legal) way to purchase cannabis is at a dispensary, so for Cookies’ website, a store locator was essential. Using a custom map component and seamless integration with location-based store filtering, we enabled users to search for dispensaries by ZIP code or city, with the option to filter out third-party locations and then view results on a map or a grid. Directions via Google Maps are no more than a click away.
Cookies is a singular cannabis company, and now it has a singularly awesome website. Thanks to dynamic layouts, full-featured landing pages, custom contact forms, punchy copy, and strategic calls to action, the company is now positioned to generate leads and turn heads. We look forward to watching as the Cookies brand—and its prized plants—continue to grow.
